What Is Pattern Fitting?
Pattern fitting is the process of adjusting a sewing pattern to better match your unique body measurements and proportions before you cut into your fabric.
Unlike ready-to-wear clothing, sewing gives you the opportunity to create garments that are made specifically for you. Pattern fitting is what transforms a handmade garment into one that looks custom tailored.
The Most Common Pattern Fitting Problems
The Bust Doesn't Fit
One of the most common fitting issues occurs at the bust.
You may notice:
- Pulling across the chest
- Excess fabric above the bust
- Gaping necklines
- Tight armholes
The Waist Is in the Wrong Place
Sometimes the garment technically fits—but the waist seam sits too high or too low.
This usually happens because torso lengths vary from person to person.
A simple length adjustment can completely change how the garment looks and feels.
Shoulders That Are Too Wide
Oversized shoulders can make even a beautifully sewn garment look sloppy.
Signs include:
- Shoulder seams falling off your shoulders
- Excess fabric near the armhole
- Sleeves hanging incorrectly
A small shoulder adjustment often creates a much more polished fit.
Sleeves Feel Tight
Many beginners assume they simply need a larger size when sleeves feel restrictive.
Often, the issue isn't the overall size—it's the sleeve itself.
Simple adjustments can add movement without changing the rest of the garment.
Pants That Don't Fit
Pants introduce an entirely different set of fitting challenges.
Common issues include:
- Pull lines across the front
- Excess fabric beneath the seat
- Tight thighs
- Waist gaps
- Twisting legs
These problems usually come down to body proportions rather than incorrect sewing.
Think of a sewing pattern as a starting point—not the final answer.
One of the biggest misconceptions in sewing is believing that if you cut the correct size, your finished garment will fit perfectly. The truth is, sewing patterns are designed using standard body measurements—but no body is truly standard. That's why pattern fitting is one of the most valuable skills you can learn.
The good news is that these issues are usually solved before you ever sew your first seam.
When I first started sewing, I knew I wanted to master fit. Or in my opinion, what was truly the point of making my own clothes. But because I'm 100% self-taught, I had to search high and low to find what worked for me.
