DIY Eggplant Coat

When I picked up this wool blend fabric I absolutely loved the color and immediately thought of a structured open coat.  When working with patterns I look at them as a base only until I become proficient in pattern making.  Instead of selecting a coat pattern, I chose to use a dress pattern McCalls M6028.  I made several panel alterations, neck, sleeve and back zipper.

DIY Leather Patchwork

I'm making an attempt to challenge myself with sketching designs as opposed to going off the top of my head.  This was a great learning experience that was quite challenging considering I don't sketch. :)  While making the pants, I had to start over several times which made me want to throw my sewing machine out the window.   After several fit issues with the pants, I finally ended with a product I'm proud of.  The top was made with my favorite pattern of all times, I added leather to the sleeves, elastic to the waist, exposed zipper down the back and a high neck.

DIY Chalk Board

Although I have the latest Apple products made that allow me to stay organized, what I love most are my trusty yellow sticky notes that are scattered all over my desk.    Not because I think their cool but because I'm so visual, I need to actually see what's on my to-do list in a glance as opposed to opening up a program.  I know it's totally 1990! In an effort to eliminate my trusty notes, I decided to incorporate these awesome chalk boards in locations in my house I spend the most time in that allow me to rid my work space of the clutter without moving me 100% into the 21st Century.

Chalkboard frame- pieces of molding from Home Depot cut into 4 pieces (2) 36" (2) 72",
spray painted and applied with wood nails to create the frame after the chalk board has dried and cured.

Leather craze

When it comes to seasonal items I don't typically splurge, but once I tried on this Joseph skirt and fell in love I had to take the plunge.  It has the softest leather ever with a bit of stretch almost like a rubber leather.  One thing I have a difficult time walking away from is leather, despite the fact I already own a few leather skirts, I figured one more wouldn't hurt.

DIY Lantern Sleeve Dress

When I initially spotted this gorgeous wool fabric, it reminded me of Vivienne Westwood and her beautiful tartan dresses and tops. Uncertain what I wanted to do with it, I thought back to the beautiful Roksanda Ilincic lantern sleeve dress and decided to make my winter interpretation using McCalls pattern M5927 with several alterations.

Lasagna Mini's

One of my New Year resolutions is to decrease my food intake ie: lose 5-7 lbs which is insanely challenging considering I LOVE food.  Not only do I love food, but I love to cook indulgent, decadent, food food.  So instead of depriving myself altogether, I find making mini versions of the food I like, a much healthier alternative.  I can eat some now and freeze some for later.

Ingredients:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Sauce
2 tbls olive oil
1lb ground Turkey
1/2 onion chopped
2 cloves garlic minced
1 bell pepper chopped
2 tbls fresh basil chopped
1 8 oz can whole tomatoes
2 tbls fresh oregano chopped
1 tbls sugar
2 cans tomato paste
salt
pepper

Ricotta sauce
16oz fat free ricotta cheese
1 egg
2 tbls dried oregano

8 oz fresh shredded mozzarella
8 oz fresh shredded monterey & cheddar

Lasagna noodles cooked according to box instructions.  Once cooked and cooled, cut each noodle in half and trim the wavy edged off of each side of the noodle.

Directions:
Heat the olive oil in a skillet, saute onion, garlic and bellpepper for about 3-4 minutes.  Add the remaining ingredients except the ground turkey.  Let simmer for 2 hours.  After the 2 hours, brown the turkey, add to the sauce and continue to simmer for 1 additional hour.

For the ricotta sauce, add the ricotta, egg and oregano, mix well and set aside.

Using a baking tin with 3x3 squares, spray the tin with baking spray, layer each square with one of the cut noodles.
layer 1 tbls of ricotta, 1 tbls cheese, 2 tbls sauce and repeat.   Close the mini's with the excess noodle from the sides to make a little box.  Add a tbls of sauce on top and sprinkle with cheese.

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

       XOXO

Vintage Black

A few months ago while scampering around in desperate search of a replacement camera lens,  I happened upon a cute little vintage shop located on the bottom floor of what was previously a church.  After the initial weirdness wore off, I was able to grasp the fact it was kinda awesome.  The prices were fantastic and although small, the selection was quite nice.  I picked up this dress which originally hit in the middle of my calf, which of course was a no go.

DIY Mod Sweatshirt Dress

Taking inspiration from this cute and cozy Opening Ceremony sweatshirt dress, I decided to make my own interpretation using Vogue pattern V8840.  I happen to love this pattern as evidence from here here and here.  The pattern is a shirt pattern which I extended to a dress, added an awesome collar that I added two layers of interfacing to the collar to allow the structure considering this is a sweatshirt fabric. It's so soft and comfy.

Cinnamon Roll Minis

When it comes to desserts anything gooey, sticky and sweet fits the bill for me.  I love homemade cinnamon rolls but can't stand the typical yeast taste that comes along with them.  Using my handy Kitchenaid on speed 2 for 5 minutes, allowing the dough to rise for only 1.3 hours in the oven on the off position will ensure fresh from the bakery cinnamon rolls without that yeast overload. Topping them off with a lemon cream cheese icing make these irresistible.

Ingredients:

Dough:
1 pkg dry yeast
1 cup of warm 2% milk
1/2 cup sugar
5 tbls butter
4 cups of flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
2 eggs

Filling:
1 1/2 tbs flour
3 tbsp cinnamon
1 cup brown sugar
5 tbls butter
1 tbls vanilla

Lemon Cream Cheese Icing:
5 tbs butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup cream cheese
1tsp vanilla
1tbls lemon juice

Directions:
1. Dissolve the yeast in the milk, set aside.
2. Mix together in a mixer, sugar, butter, flour, cinnamon, salt and eggs.  Add the yeast mixture, mix well and knead with a dough hook or by hand.
3. Place dough into a bowl, cover with plastic, place the bowl in a off oven and let rise for 1.3 hours and the dough has doubled in size.
4. Roll the dough onto a floured surface, approximately 15x11 inches.  If the dough is sticky, add light flour.
5. For the filling mix in a bowl, mix all the ingredients nixing well.
6. Spread the mix evenly over the dough.
7. Roll the dough in a tube like direction.
8. Cut the dough nto 1 inch slices, and place each roll in a greased mini cupcake pan.
9. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.
10. Add all the ingredients for the cream cheese icing in a large bowl and mix well with a hand mixer.
11. Add a dollop of icing to the top of each roll and the icing will melt into the roll.

Enjoy!
