DIY Fur Sleeve Coat

From the moment the BCBG Max Azria fur sleeve coats seen here hit the floor, I completely melted.  This is the moment I fell for fur.  I have my indulgences but because of my ADD for outerwear, forking out several thousand on a coat is out of the question.  Remembering my vintage fur caplet collecting dust in my closet made me want to put it to good use, which is what I did using New Look Pattern 6163 and adding a leather neck, sleeves and fur to a bright red wool.

Ultimate Comfort Food

Once the bitter cold moves in, my desire for comfort foods completely take over and all I can think of are meals that allow me to take a rainy Saturday and munch all day.  One of those foods happen to be sheppards pie.  Infusing my LOVE of mashed potatoes with veggies and ground chicken,  put a spin on the traditional beef pie.  Continuing to break in my Kitchenaid mixer I received for  Christmas, I was finally able to use the meat grinder to grind my very own chicken which feels great knowing my ground meat has no fillers which is my attempt to lie to myself and claim this is halfway healthy.

1lb ground chicken seasoned with garlic, seasoned salt, pepper, oregano
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup chopped onions
1/2 cup frozen peas
1/2 cup frozen corn
5 medium potatoes boiled
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup chicken broth
1tbls butter
1tbls olive oil

Add the olive oil to a heated skillet and brown the chicken until fully cooked.  remove from the skillet and set aside.
With the shavings left in the skillet from the chicken, sauté the carrots, onions, peas and corn.  Add the chicken back to the pan along with the chicken broth and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Mash the potatoes while still warm in the pot, add the butter and cream ensuring the mashed potatoes are a bit stiff.

Put the chicken mix in a baking dish, spread the mashed potatoes over the mix and bake for 30 minutes.

Perfect holiday hostess gift

The holiday season is filled with dinner parties and gatherings but we can't forget it's the season of giving.  When given the pleasure of attending a party at someone's home, even if not asked it's important not to arrive empty handed, which is the perfect opportunity to showcase your DIY skills and contribute to the cocktails that will be flowing.

Infused simple syrup which takes an ordinary cocktail to the next level is a DIY must.  Not only do you save money but the flavor is so intense you will never go back to store bought again.

Does Kahlua need an introduction? I don't think so.  Substituting espresso for the traditional coffee, infusing cinnamon and vanilla bean is sure to have your friends wanting the recipe.

Lemon infused simple syrup

2 cups of sugar
2 cups of water
zest of 1 lemon
juice from 1.5 lemons

Strawberry infused simple syrup

2 cups of sugar
2 cups of water
1/2 cup of fresh strawberries

Add sugar to boiling water until completely dissolved.  Add the infusions and allow to simmer for additional 2 minutes.  Let the syrup cool then bottle.  As a garnish, add a few pieces of lemon and strawberries.  Refrigerate the syrup.

4 Cups of water
2 3/4 cups of sugar
3 tbls instant espresso
1 tsp cinnamon
2 vanilla beans
2 1/2 cups of vanilla rum

Boil water, espresso, cinnamon, whole vanilla beans and sugar and simmer for 3.5 hours stirring frequently.  After 3 hours, remove the vanilla beans slice open and add the beans to the liquid.  Cook for an additional 30 minutes.  All the liquid to cool, add the rum and bottle.

Houndstooth DIY Pt2

A couple of months ago I made this top out of wool houndstooth fabric that was so incredibly easy to work with.  I  loved it so much I figured I would make this skirt out of the left over fabric using Vogue pattern V8841.  I also loved the cobalt and houndstooth combination so when I saw this jacket on sale at the Urban Outfitters store in China Town for only $20.00 I felt compelled.  The jacket is a great vibrant color and with the exception of the uber cheap pleather oddly colored sleeves, I really liked it.  So of course I had to remove the sleeves and replace them with cobalt suede.

DIY Leather Tote

I'm personally a clutch fan but nothing is better than a carryall tote.  The great thing about this tote are the handles which can be removed and replaced with another color due to the brass hardware being screws and not permanently attached.

Whole Wheat Spinach Pasta

In addition to my love of beautiful things, I am an absolute kitchen gadget junkie.  I can proudly say I inherit that title from my mom who started this all with an easy bake oven at the tender age of six. Fast forward many years later and I probably have every gadget and appliance known to man.  One of my beloved gadgets is this nifty pasta machine that enables me to make one of my favorites......whole wheat spinach pasta.

5 oz spinach (blanched)
3 Eggs
2 Cups whole wheat flour
1 Tbls water

Add blanched and paper towel dried spinach, flour and eggs to a mixing bowl.  Mix well.  If using a stand mixer, attach the kneading tool and knead mix for 1 minute, otherwise knead until no longer tacky.
Place ball of dough on a floured surface and roll into a pie sized circle.  Cut the circle into four pieces and again roll those pieces.  Feed each rolled piece into the pasta maker, catching the pasta as it exits the maker.

Drape over a rack until strands are dry enough not to stick together.  Cook immediately, or lay flat on a baking sheet, cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

DIY drape front jacket

When I'm shopping for sewing patterns, I look at the pattern as a base.  Nine times out of ten I never like the pattern but view it in terms of potential, and before I can see the potential I have to have a design inspiration in mind.  That brings me to this pattern...... Mcalls M5937 and these inspirations from Helmut Lang, Givenchy and Michael Kors .  I used a wool/cashmere blend and lined with a poly blend, finished it off with Minelli Italian leather to the sleeves.

Pattern alterations:

Shorten the pattern by 5 inches
Added a drawstring to the waist
Added gathers to the back of the neck to allow the collar to remain in the up position.
Shortened the sleeves and added cashmere
Added a button closure to create an additional look

Sweater- Vintage Givenchy

Clutch- BCBG

Shop my closet

I'm what some would call an impulse shopper, I tend to make purchases based on the "in the moment feeling" and as a result I have a closet filled with clothes.  I decided to spend my Sunday pulling items I haven't worn or even looked at in over a year.  What I uncovered was quite a few pieces with tags still attached, so my obsession is up for grabs.
