Extended Vacation

I believe this is the longest vacation I have been on in a long time and I can honestly say I'm ready to get back home.  With a few days left to soak up the sun I thought I'd share a few pics from a few places we visited.

My obsession continues

When I look at an item of clothing It's very rare that I am instantly in love.  I need to visualize it's potential which is probably why I began making some of my own items.  When I picked up this Ralph Lauren dress and tried it on, I thought ok it's cute but very non de script.  One thing that kept me looking at it was the fabric felt really good on my skin (I know kinda strange) but it truly didn't speak to me so I did what I often do which is put the dress on backward and at that point I fell in love.

Thank you Oscar

If I ever had the opportunity to meet Oscar de la Renta, I would give him the biggest hug and thank him for everything he designed circa 1968-1979.  I generally have to tailor pretty much everything I wear with the exception of vintage Oscar, it's as if his clothes were made especially for my long limbs.

Houndstooth DIY sweater

While browsing my local fabric store I came across this houndstooth wool fabric that reminded me of my vintage  Oscar De La Renta sweater I found at an awesome deal while consignment shopping.  I had no clue what I was going to do with and then thought back to the beautiful Roksanda Ilincic dress with the most amazing sleeves that I absolutely love.  I picked the easiest Vogue pattern ever and the design inspiration simply came as I sewed.  I added a rolled neckline, elastic waist and extended bell sleeves with pleats.  I was able to finally use my serger so the construction is impeccable.  I'm quite proud of this one.

DIY Leather and Lace

Ok, your probably tired of seeing this Vogue pattern here here and here but I couldn't resist.  I really liked this leather and lace top and this dress but in person it wasn't as adorable, the leather looked fake and I figured I could do something else with my $160.00.  I used some of the left over fabric from this skirt and leather from ebay, shortened the peplum, altered the sleeves and created this cute little top for about $25.00 and considering it's one season lifespan, It was a no brainer.

The exposed zipper with a leather pull gives this top a lot more personality!

Growing up I recall having a velvet sofa and jacquard curtains that I absolutely hated.  I was way to young to be able to appreciate such an intricate fabric.  Fast forward many years and the new explosion of brocade, jacquard and baroque, I have learned to appreciate and have fallen in love with this beautiful and elegant textile that brings back so many memories.

30 Minute Curry Chicken Pockets

You all know by now I am a fan of food that has a surprise in the middle as well as using left overs to create dishes, so using leftover chicken breast this is the perfect 30 minute goodie.

1 large chicken breast cooked and cut into cubes
1/4 cup low-fat cream cheese softened
Wonton wraps
1/4 cup onions diced
1 cup spinach diced
1/2 cup mushrooms diced
1 tbls Indian curry
1/2 tsp cumin
cooking spray

Mix onions, spinach, mushrooms and cream cheese.
Add the chicken breast, curry, cumin and salt & pepper mixing well.
Spray 1 wonton with cooking spray and add 1 tbls of mix in the center of the wonton and fold like an envelope.
Space the wontons 1inch apart on a cookie sheet of parchment paper and bake 15 minutes on 375.

Carolina Herrera Reconstructed

I'm famous for chopping a piece of clothing to shreds and that's exactly what I did with this bright yellow Carolina Herrera wrap dress.  I generally do this when I've worn a piece to death and just simply tired of wearing it but not this time.  I made an attempt to wear this amazingly beautiful dress and the top was so tight I could barely lift my arms, lets just go ahead and say the dress shrunk :).  After chopping off, I still couldn't bring myself to toss the top so my brain is working overtime to determine how I can salvage.  Stay tuned!

White after Labor Day

I'm not sure who came up with the rule of no white after Labor Day or better yet, what made everyone fall in line.  I'm proud to say I never fell into the foolery, I was that kid wearing leather pants the first day of 5th grade (looking back, I don't know about that) and white jeans in the dead of winter.  Crazy enough, I think white is more beautiful in cooler weather.
