New Skincare Additions

A true product junkie to the death of me, I have a cabinet filled with every skincare cream you can imagine.  Luckily for me I don't have sensitive skin so I can try and sample pretty much any brand without the dreaded breakouts.  That's probably a result of my self performed facials at the ripe age of 7.  There's not a day that goes by that I don't use a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen and eye cream in that order.  I adopted this routine over 15 years ago and it hasn't failed me yet.  When I shop for products, I tend to go a bit overboard and end up coming home with products I forgot I had.  From this shopping session I picked up a few brands I have never tried like  Lanocreme, MD Private Selections and K Laboratories.  I plan to report back next week with the reviews.

1. DDF Ultra Lite Oil-Free Moisturizing Dew

2.  MD Private Selections Plant Stem Cell

3.  Cosmedicine Oily Combination Skin Kit

4.  K Laboratories Refinishing Eye Contour Cream

5.  Lanocreme Extra Firming Eye Gel

6.  Laidbare Anti-ageing Hydration Cream

Quiche with a twist

One of my favorites dishes of all time has to be quiche.  My mother who was the most incredible chef ever, made the most amazing quiche that had my sister and I raving about it our entire life.  I decide to re-create a family staple with a twist.  Instead of the Jimmy Dean sausage my mom used, I opted for Italian chicken sausage.

DIY Peplum

My peplum love continues with this DIY. I was in search of a yellow top that didn't cost as much as a pair of heels simply because this bright trend will not be around for too much longer and who wants an expensive outdated top collecting dust in their closet next year? I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the peplum tops I see from Zara, ASOS and H&M simply because they look great at first sight but the quality of the fabric is subpar,  so I challenged myself to make a top out of fantastic fabric under $40, and I think I accomplished it.  The idea started when following Erica B. which is by the way a fantastic DIY style blog.  Erica posted a peplum DIY top from Vogue which I loved.  I figured with instructions I could probably pull it off, which was pretty big for me considering this is the first project I've ever made off a pattern.  I found this bright yellow silk infused  Italian linen fabric originally $60.00 a yard in the clearance bin for 18.00, and because I needed less than a yard, it was perfect.  I picked up the Vogue pattern for $13.50, finished the top within a day all for $31.50.

Lace & Silk Peplum

Peplum tops are one of those tops you are able to do pretty much any and everything with and they are so forgiving.  You can convert a peplum top into a cute fashionable peplum dress by wearing it over a dress they may be a bit dated, you can play it up with a pencil skirt or dress it down with jeans or cargo pants.

Perfect Summer Salad

With the heat wave we have had the past few days, I have only had the taste for salads, ice cream and frappuccino.  Unfortunately I can no longer eat ice cream all day and taking time out of my schedule  to  grab a frappuccino is unrealistic and unhealthy, so I opt to instead make salads in bulk.  This allows me to snack all day without feeling too guilty.

Perfect Salad
arugula
turkey bacon
red onion
tomatoes
cranberries
walnuts
sunflower seeds
carrots

Honey Dijon dressing
3 tbls Dijon
1 tbls Honey
3/4 cup onions
1 tbls red wine vinegar
3/4 cup olive oil

Wedding..........what to wear?

Over the past two and a half months I have been to four weddings including my own, two engagement parties, and two bridal showers.  My goal is to always make sure in addition to being somewhat fashionable, that I'm most definitely comfortable.  This dress is by far one of my most comfortable.  I can eat like crazy and don't have to worry about a bulge, it's silk so it's light airy, it has the pockets I love, and it's not too short, although because I'm 5'10 1/2 " shorter hem skirts appear much shorter on me :(

Long Lost McQueen

A few days ago I was delighted when I came across a box in my closet filled with clothes I failed to sort after my move almost two years ago, clearly I need to purge.  In that box was my beloved Alexander Mcqueen dress I purchased a few years ago for $20 at a sample sale in New York that I thought was lost or accidentally thrown away.  It's simple, edgy and comfy all in one.

Adventures of a backsplash

Our contractor has finally completed the bar project and I love it.  Because of my need to be a part of everything and put my personal stamp on the project, I decided to try my hand at the backsplash.  I was pretty intimidated simply because I was now dealing with a new space and I didn't want to ruin the contractors work.  But I was brave and went full speed ahead with the help of the internet.  I started with tile selection and fell in love with the earthier travertine tones which I discovered later was not the best decision for a newby.  After the tile purchase which meant I was committed, I discovered travertine which is a stone will require a wet saw, and a number of additional products and steps that are not necessary with glass tile and was not mentioned on  the youtube video I watched.  Fast forward three days and I finally have a completed project I'm really proud of, a new found respect for power tools, and a renewed sense of patience.  Now it's time for the fun part.......... basement decorating!

General Tso's Chicken

In keeping with my Asian inspired dishes I wanted to create a "slightly" healthier version of a staple.  I definitely enjoy general tso's but I typically end the meal feeling very full, bloated and guilty.  As an alternative, I used whole wheat flour as opposed to cornstarch, brown rice as opposed to white and fresh squeezed orange juice instead of sugar.  I have been truly delighted to continue the opportunity to use food from my garden like these green onions which were insanely strong and so good.

Running Around

I have received several questions regarding my everyday running around apparel and do I get dressed up to simply run to the store? lol the answer is absolutely not.  I do not get "dressed up" to run errands but I like to look somewhat put together with very little effort.  I have lots of dresses which require no dry cleaning or ironing like this gauze material dress over a body con that's very easy to throw on and looks great with a pair of sandals and a tote.  I keep my earrings to a minimum with studs and a simple watch.  Total out the door time 10 minutes.

DIY Maxi Dress

I'm in the process of decorating my basement and in my constant quest to keep my creative juices flowing, lately I find that I enjoy frequenting fabric stores looking for furniture fabric ideas.  When this jersey fabric caught my eye (completely on the other side of the store and clearly no where near household fabric)  I had to make a detour.  Again I am by no means a seamstress or a designer, I simply enjoy interesting fabric.  I had no idea what I intended on making, but figured a draped tube dress would probably be appropriate and easy.  Well the draped tube dress turned into a little something more with the waist gathering and strap.  I'm proud to say this dress cost only $10.00 to make,  took only three hours out of my day and was perfect timing to wear to a birthday party.  The jersey fabric makes the dress not too dressy and the detail makes it not too casual.

Spicy Coconut Thai Shrimp

One of my all time favorite foods has to be Thai Shrimp from pretty much any authentic Thai restaurant. So when my husband came home and asked if I wanted Thai from our neighborhood spot, my first reaction was ABSOLUTELY!  After a few moments, I thought about the fact we had already been out four days this week and opted to whip up my own Thai meal.

Pajama Shirt Dressing

While making a quick toiletries stop into my neighborhood Target, I spotted a cute little pajama shirt that had great street potential.  My thoughts were "a quick button change, cute heels and jewelry and I think I may have something".   At only $14.99 it was a no-brainer.
